“Nobody takes us to NATO. There is an official statement. They didn’t just send us, because it is inconvenient, after all, the allies. They said this, officially, for the first time: do not come in for the next ten years. <…> And we will include this clause in the constitution. We make ourselves crazy in front of the whole world, “the parliamentarian said on the air of the Ukraine 24 TV channel.

He added that Ukraine should become a neutral independent country following the example of Switzerland. The parliamentarian also stressed that “you cannot constantly walk around the world with outstretched hand.”

The Verkhovna Rada in 2014 amended two laws, abandoning the non-aligned status of the state. In June 2016, additional amendments were adopted that define NATO membership as the country’s foreign policy goal. In February 2019, the Ukrainian parliament adopted amendments to the constitution, securing the country’s course towards the EU and NATO.

In December, Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy held talks with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, during which he did not receive an answer to the question about the timing of the country’s admission to the military bloc.

Earlier, Sputnik radio reported that NATO accused Russia of creating a real danger of a conflict in Europe.
